Carrot Aid har nu taget initiativ til en manual, der i tekst og billeder kan skildre, hvordan man sår, dyrker, høster og opbevarer gulerodsfrø i Etiopien. Den teknik, man anvender ved produktion af gulerodsfrø, er nærmest ukendt i Etiopien, og viden om den bedste dyrkningsmetode er svær at skaffe for bønderne, især på deres eget sprog. Der er nemlig forskel på at dyrke gulerødder, der er beregnet til at spise, og gulerødder, der er beregnet til frøproduktion. Manualen vil kun være anvendelig i forbindelse med gulerodssorten AUA-108. Målet er at producere 500 laminerede A4-ark, som beskriver den optimale teknik, der anvendes til at producere frø fra AUA-108. Manualen skal først skrives på engelsk og siden oversættes til de tre etiopiske hovedsprog, Amharic, Tigrinya og Oromiga. Den skal desuden indeholde fotografier af god kvalitet, som kan illustrere den beskrevne teknik.

1. Problem statement

The technique of producing carrot seed is almost unknown in Ethiopia, and knowledge of optimal horticultural techniques is difficult for farmers to access, particularly in their own language.

2. Boundaries, beyond which the investigation should not go.

User guides should be produced ready for a future phase of the carrot cultivation project when the user guides will be distributed to selected farmers together with a suitable amount of carrot seed. Recipients of the sheets are not yet identified.

3. Specific issues to be addressed

The difference between cultivating carrots as a food crop compared to growing carrots in order to produce seeds.

Mention must be made that the user guide only applies to the specific AUA-108 variety of carrot.

Techniques to treat and store the seeds between harvesting and sowing, using local materials if possible.

4. Desired outcomes/outputs

Five hundred high quality laminated A4 sheets describing the optimal techniques to be employed to produce AUA-108 carrot seeds in Ethiopia.

User guides to first be prepared in English and then translated into other languages (Amharic, Oromigna, Tigrigna). Each language to have its own typeset and be separately translated.

The user guide to contain good quality photos to illustrate the techniques described;

The user guide should be double face laminated A4 for durability to users. 100 copies to be printed in Oromigna, 100 copies in Tigrinya, 298 copies in Amharic and 2 copies in English.
